I love pretend play when it’s advanced enough to play along in a theatrical-like manner. We’re getting to that point with the big kids, my sweet eldest daughter specifically. This weekend, she made a store that sells…. Money! In all different colors. The best part – the money was free! Carter proceeded to rob me after I received my free money which then prompted me to unleash my inner, secret police officer on him and take him to jail. But, it begged the question – why steal when the money was free? We sat down for hours of conversation over intense moral dilemmas, all while discussing the pros and cons of Socrates vs. Aristotle. After all, “the unexamined life is not worth living….” Of course the moral debate didn’t happen; we did it again and was the robber and the police officer. Maybe ethics will be something we can debate for hours at some point, but we’re not there with 5.5 year olds.
We’ve been more interested in podcasts recently, on the way to school. Mondays are different because I have to get everyone out of the house at 7:00, but other days, I’m just responsible for Carter and Isabelle; those days markedly more relaxing. Isabelle gets to “boss” me around on Mondays and Wednesdays (exclusively on the route we take to school) and Carter, on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Whoever isn’t bossing me around is in charge of the radio – whether it be music or podcasts, or nothing. Because, that’s “fair” as my kids think. Entering the discussion more frequently is the concept that fair doesn’t mean everyone getting the same thing, but rather everyone getting what they need. That’s a divergent post from our mornings, though, and one with significantly more commentary. The podcasts that the kids are most drawn to are about answering questions. We’re almost through one that discusses blood in detail and just finished one about broken bones.
It’s always tricky to time the writing of these; my brain is best in the morning, but it’s hard to time without risking the herd waking. The girls are now both with me; Scarlett fell out of her bed and disrupted the morning’s routine. Scarlett loves to tell you in your ear that she’s a nice girl, you’re a nice girl, and she loves you. So I’ll leave you with that and I’ll resume my first job as a line cook. You’re a nice girl and I love you. ❤
Peace and love.
