It’s funny – I was musing the other day how age mainly disappears as you get older. If you work outside the home, you work with people who are older and younger. Some could be your subordinates, some could be your superiors, but their age doesn’t necessarily matter – it all blurs together. There are, of course, outliers to this with the new slang that Gen Z continues to bring to my attention. I may get losing rizz for being an elder millennial, jokingly referred to as “boomer,” but aside from vernacular differences, age is a swirling pool. The one place where age remains forever is in birth order. I will never not be my brother’s younger sister and my parents’ daughter. Yes, we relate as adults, but the power of birth order and familial ties is an interesting concept.
As my family structure is somewhat different, it will be interesting to see how things develop. That being said, it’s shaping up to be the same as any other. There’s a camp of twin parents who believe that you should never tell your children who was born first, but we’ve blown that (though it wasn’t our intention to do). At school one time, someone asked, and we answered. Since that moment, there have been no less than 1000 instances of Izzy saying she’s older than Carter or Carter saying “the youngest gets to go first” in whatever game we’re playing (I made the mistake of reading the rules of Trouble out loud at one point). But more than that, she truly does exemplify a first born. I do believe the “first born” traits most commonly discussed are more prevalent in females and often those traits are simply modeled after their same gendered parent (as is the case in our family), so it’s hard to say what plays more of a role.
This is one of those posts with no hard sticking point. We are doing well here, wading through the chaos and anxiously awaiting our long Easter weekend where we will get to go to the zoo and some other activities. Much love!
